I am very excited to report the arrival of a beautiful Painted Turtle to our pond this spring. I do hope she stays, even though her diet includes fish. Look out gold fish!

Right now she is very wary and shy and usually dives deep when anyone approaches the pond, but I’m hoping she will get used to us as time goes on, if she stays that is. Yes I said she…and no I don’t know for sure but for now I’ve named her Myrtle the turtle.

The Painted Turtle is the most widespread native turtle of North America. I believe our turtle is the Midland Painted Turtle due to it’s pale under shell. The Midland Painted turtle lives in southern Ontario and Quebec and through eastern US and Midwest. Painted Turtles eat fish, tadpoles, frogs, aquatic plants and insects.
