A Not so Welcome Guest at Bluebird Meadows B&B

The sight of a Great Blue Heron is a top siting for most nature lovers in Ontario.  In fact it is one of the birds my guests are most thrilled to see when they are birding in our various wetlands and marshes.  Second only to the Common Loon, the Great Blue Heron symbolizes Ontario’s wild side.

There is a good chance of spotting this majestic water bird while visiting Bluebird Meadows B&B, as just one mile east of us there is a marsh that has a small rookery every spring of nesting Great Blues.  Usually 5-8 nests can be spotted at the tops of some dead trees at the back of the marsh each spring with usually 2-4 chicks vying for their parents attention.

Every once and a while one will visit our pond for a quick snack of a frog or even one of  our fish.  We try to discourage this by hanging distractions that twirl in the breeze, but sometimes you get a very determined and probably very hungry bird that couldn’t care less about our hanging CD’s or even our mini-schnauzer.

These photos around our pond were just taken a few days ago.  This guy doesn’t mind getting his photo taken and I was happy to take him up on a few shots.

Maybe if I stand still she won’t see me…
