A Sure Sign of Spring is when the Great Blue Herons Return

Every Spring we look forward to the the return of the majestic Great Blue Herons who nest nearby in a small colony.  They can safely be observed from a distance volleying for the best spots in a small rookery in the marsh nearby.   We also hope that the marsh has enough frogs and fish to keep these herons satisfied so they don’t seek out our pond for a goldfish or two or ten.  This can be a significant problem, as once they find our pond they will keep returning for an easy meal.  One remedy to this problem is to hang a CD or two at the heron’s eye height with fishing line.   The CD twirls in the breeze and when the sun hits it, reflections bling around the pond causing enough of a distraction to deter the birds.

Great Blue Herons are an iconic symbol of our outdoors and seeing one is always a treat.

The Bluebirds have returned to the meadows of the B&B and I will blog about them in the coming weeks.

Happy Birding.
