A Surprise Visitor to the Oranges

Each Spring we put out orange halves for returning Baltimore Orioles.  To our delight this past weekend a bird we never expected. A birder can wait a life time to see a Scarlet Tanager.  Definitely a find for your birding life list.  Who knew they liked oranges?  Usually a bird of the forest canopy and difficult to spot, this pair was here for two days recharging on oranges at our Oriole feeders.

The Scarlet Tanager is the only member of the tanager clan that routinely nests in Ontario.  Its winter home is all the way south in northern south America.  Mainly an insect lover, they will however eat fruit, including raspberries, blackberries and obviously…oranges.
