Baltimore Orioles Return

Every year around the first of May I put out some oranges sliced in the middle along the equator and impaled on twigs and branches in our trees at the front of the B&B with the hopes of attracting an Oriole. Then about 8 years ago I came across an oriole feeder with ports for their favourite food…grape jelly. And not just any grape jelly, as I’ve tried to buy no-name etc to save a bit of money, but their all time favourite is Welches Grape Jelly. Be careful not to my the jam version. Now we usually get 3-4 pairs and they stay and nest on our acreage and eventually they bring their babies to our feeder so they too can get hooked on grape jelly. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not, all I know is our population of Orioles that call Bluebird Meadows home for the summer has increase substantially since the addition of the grape jelly feeder. They still like their oranges but I think it’s the grape jelly that keeps them coming back all summer long.
Right now as they fight for their terriories, we have 6 males and 2 females. I’m sure more females will arrive in the days to come. There is nothing sweeter than the sound of an Baltimore Oriole singing for his breakfast.
Thanks again to Donna Tolmie for the great shot.
