Have you ever seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker?

In our region these woodpeckers are very rare.  When we have had the pleasure of seeing one of these jewels it’s first thing in the spring and then they stay for just a day or two.  The attraction here seems to be our suet and peanut feeders.  So Bluebird Meadows B&B is just a pit-stop on their journey to their nesting grounds.  This shy woodpecker was once common throughout southern Ontario, but it’s numbers have declined dramatically over the years due to Euopean Starlings outcompeting them for nesting cavities.   The Red-headed woodpecker is also frequently hit on our roads as they dart out across the road in persuit of flying insects.  So if you are lucky enough to see one of these beautiful birds in your lifetime, you are indeed blessed.
