What a treat our guests had on Saturday to witness the fledging of our nest box of American Kestrals. Actually looks like one little boy and two girls. Our guests enjoyed telling us the exciting news of their walk on the trails before breakfast… saying they were all on the same branch…”like Larry Curly and Moe.
The American Kestral is our smallest and most common falcon. Often nicknamed the Sparrow Hawk. They like to nest in cavities in dead trees, old woodpecker holes or in our case a bird box…that Larry initially intended for a Saw Whet Owl or Northern Flicker.
About the size of a robin or morning dove, Kestrals eat mostly small rodents and grasshoppers and the occasional small bird or frog.
Photo Credit to our amazing friend and photographer, Donna Tolmie and a huge thank you too !

Helpless and so dependent on its parents this little girl could barely fly when she left the nest box to keep up with her brother and sister

The little male kestral chick is already showing his fancy feathers as he is much prettier than his sisters.
