Well Mother’s Day found us checking on our mother Bluebirds and counting nests and eggs so far this spring. We are happy to report Box 1, just out from the parking lot has 5 eggs, Box 2 in the far north west meadow has 4 eggs and Box 3 at the junction of the two south fields by Peter Street has 2. More news to follow when we check the boxes in a week or two again.
We also have Tree Swallows in one of our boxes. You can tell a Tree Swallow nest because there is always a white feather in the nest. Makes me smile every time. More on the Tree Swallow in a later blog.
Eastern Bluebirds can have up to 3 broods a year but with the cold spring we have experienced, first nesting attempts are at least 3-4 weeks late this year. Bluebirds eat mostly insects and fruit so weather plays a big part on whether they find enough to eat or feed their young. There have been springs where the weather has turned bad, with an unexpected snowfall or a week of rain and we have had to supplement a box of baby bluebirds with meal worms for the parents to feed their young until better weather returns.
Happy birding everyone !
