Ontario’s Rarest Woodpecker visits Bluebird Meadows Bed and Breakfast

Have you ever seen Ontario’s rarest woodpecker?  This young male Red-bellied Woodpecker is finding our shelled peanut feeder a big treat.  Usually you would have a better chance of seeing this bird in extreme southern Ontario, in the last remaining stands of Carolinian forest.  In recent years mild winters have expanded their range and enabled the Red-bellied Woodpecker to increase its numbers in our province.

These birds are very vocal and announce their presence at the feeders with their soft churring calls.

Red-bellied woodpeckers also love to eat fruit and are considered pests in the US where they can feed and damage commercial fruit crops
