The songs of the male Brown Thrasher are unique among our native Ontario birds. Arriving in early spring they perch from the tallest tree and sing to attract a mate. This thrasher has the most extensive vocal repertoire of any North American bird and it is estimated that it is capable of up to 3000 distinctive combinations of various lengthy phrases. Their name does not do them justice as the Brown Thrasher is not really brown, but a beautiful shade of rusty orange with a spotted breast and two white wing bars. The tree filled fence rows at Bluebird Meadows provides excellent habitat for these birds and you will often see them on our trails foraging for insects or eating the wild berries that grow along the trails. They also love to come to forage on the ground under the feeders at the B&B, being particularly fond of shelled peanuts.
