Introducing Mr. & Mrs. Purple Finch

This winter has seen a bumper crop of Purple Finches at the feeders at Bluebird Meadows B&B.  The Purple finch has a gentle nature and is quite willing shares the feeders with other birds.  Flat raised table style feeders are their preferance, or just a flat railing on your deck will do.  Our small flock of about 20 finches has stayed all winter.  Interspersed with Gold Finches and Pine Siskens the Flat feeder at the back can get quite crowded.  In the summer we manage to hold on to at least two breeding pairs and it’s always a treat when they bring their younsters to the feeders.

Purple (purpureus) is simply a false description of this bird’s reddish colouration.  The males look more like they have been dipped in raspberry juice.  The Purple Finch is quite a bit redder than the similar House Finch.

I hope you get out and enjoy all the great birds there are to discover.  Happy birding !
